Teaching Economics in the Knowledge-based Economy: A Case Study of Multimedia University, Malaysia By

In the current technology-oriented and knowledge-based economy, effective teaching of economics requires frequent curricular revisions to offer new and timely courses to fulfil industry needs. In addition, teaching methodologies should be designed in a way that enhances learning processes. This paper examines the curriculum development in economics at Multimedia University, the first private university in Malaysia, to offer new an undergraduate programme in Knowledge Economics. In addition, the paper highlights the new multimedia-base learningenhancement methodologies – namely, the Multimedia Learning System (MMLS), the Networked Multimedia Education System (NMES) and a range of Internet-based Degree Programmes (IBDP) – now being implemented at this university. A survey has been conducted to study the effectiveness of the education system in a multimedia-based environment and the results are discussed in this paper.
